Places for Pollinators Workshop in Topsham
When: Fri., June 28, 2019, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Where: Topsham Public Library, 25 Foreside Road, Topsham, Maine
In this interactive workshop Deb will guide workshop participants through the observation, identification, and ecology of pollinators. She will also discuss pollinator habitat needs and environmental stressors, as well as what you can do to create high value pollinator habitat on your property. Following the indoor presentation, we will be making a field trip to Whatley Farm, who has graciously invited us to walk their property in search of pollinators.
Please bring comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, bug spray, a hat, and a hand lens if you have one. The field portion of this event may not be suitable for those with difficulty navigating rough terrain. If this is the case, please feel free to join us for just the classroom portion of this workshop. This program is funded by USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service through agreement number 16-1218-17-005.
Cost: Free to attend, but pre-registration is required.

Bees & Bears At The hayloft

Come learn about the fascinating ecology and behavior of Bees and Bears in Deb’s newest presentation offering - in a really cool venue! Deb has crawled into bear dens and loves to get up-close and personal with some of our 270 species of native bees in Maine. In this variety show, Deb will share her "wild" experiences studying bears in Maine, the Rocky Mountain West, and Alaska, followed by a deep look at what makes our native bees so compelling. You'll walk away from this virtual adventure with practical tips and ideas for how to conserve and coexist with these iconic animals.

Wind Birds in the Land of the Midnight Sun
When: TBA (postponed from August 1, 2019 to Sept./Oct.)
Where: Maine Lake Science Center - 51 Willett Road, Bridgton, Maine
A beautiful, adventurous presentation about Deb’s graduate research on Arctic-breeding shorebirds in the Eastern Canadian Arctic. You’ll be guided on a virtual tour of what it’s like to work and live in a remote Arctic field camp with just a handful of other biologists. Learn about how the team handled wind storms, polar bears, and the challenges of running a laboratory in a canvas tent. Experience the feeling of being immersed in the study of birds and their relationship to the highly dynamic tundra environment. Deb will also discuss how climate change is threatening Arctic wildlife and Inuit cultures.
Creating Bird-Friendly Habitats - Audubon Camp on Hog Island
When: August 18-21, 2019
Where: Hog Island, Bremen, Maine
Discover how to make your property irresistible to birds and pollinators! This three-day session focuses on enhancing wildlife habitat on properties large and small. Presentations by entomology professor Doug Tallamy, author of Bringing Nature Home, will emphasize restoring natural relationships between native plants and insects, and offer tips for attracting insects that in turn attract birds. Dr. Tallamy’s entomology perspective will complement bird perspectives from Audubon’s Dr. Stephen Kress, author of The Audubon Society Guide to Attracting Birds who will discuss the co-evolution of native plants and native birds, and provide tips for creating bird-friendly habitats that mimic native plant communities, without using harmful pesticides.
Other instructors include Maine Coastal Botanical Gardens plant curator Andy Brand, who will share his gardening knowledge about native plants, and wildlife ecologist Deb Perkins, who will provide tips on enhancing larger properties such as forests and meadows, and on obtaining funding from government programs for attracting birds to private properties. All information is easily transferable to properties everywhere.
The session also will include practical tips on creating water features, nest boxes, and roosting structures, as well as on making your home and gardens safer for birds. Also included are field trips to local homes and gardens where landowners will demonstrate their success in improving bird habitats. Guided Pollinator Walk During King BlooM

Wildlife ecologist Deborah Perkins brings us an engaging, informative, and visually dramatic show for all ages! Deborah’s experience as a bear biologist included studying black bears and grizzly bears across North America. In Maine, she worked with the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife’s black bear program. Have you ever climbed into a bear’s den? Well, Deb has!
In fact, Deb has worked on various other bird and mammal studies throughout North America including shorebirds in the Canadian Arctic, Canada Lynx in northern Maine, and seals and seabirds in Maine. In this program Deb will bring her Black Bear adventures to life with stories, science, and pictures. The program is free and open to the public. Come early for refreshments and social time.
